A Signature Executive Reflection on Social Capital
The giraffe and the peacock had been friends for over 30 years.
Same industry.
Same discipline.
Different paths.
Giraffe became Chief Risk Officer.
Peacock became director of human resources & administration.
One evening, under an acacia tree, they reviewed an invitation.
A high-level networking event.
Peacock sighed.
“I’m not going.”
The giraffe raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”
“I don’t enjoy those spaces. Too much noise. Too much… performance.”
Giraffe nodded.
“There’s nothing wrong with enjoying your own space.”
Pause.
Then came the shift.
“But leadership is not built in isolation.”
Peacock adjusted his feathers.
“I already have relationships.”
Giraffe smiled.
“Yes. Strong ones.”
Then leaned forward.
“But are they expanding?”
Silence.
Giraffe continued:
“You manage people. I manage risk.
But both of us depend on something we don’t fully control…”
Peacock looked at him.
“People.”
Giraffe nodded.
“Not just inside your organisation.
The ones outside it.”
Another pause.
“Social capital is not about attending events,” Giraffe said.
“It’s about being known, trusted, and remembered—beyond your role.”
Peacock looked at the invitation again.
Still reluctant.
But thinking.
That night, he didn’t stay long.
Didn’t speak to everyone.
Didn’t perform.
But he showed up.
And that changed something.
Not instantly.
But strategically.

Influence is not just built through performance.
It is sustained through relationships.
👉 Financial capital may open doors.
👉 Social capital decides how long they stay open.
🎯 Take Action
Ask yourself:
👉 Who knows me beyond my role?
👉 Where am I visible—but not known?
👉 Where am I known—but not growing?
Then act.
Not loudly.
Not performatively.
Strategically.
